How Should Simulator Time Be Logged in a Pilot's Log Book?

Understanding what comprises flight simulator time and logging it correctly have become even more important since an October 2009 update to the Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR). Additional and revised regulations expand previous definitions and provide for greater flexibility than previously allowed, opening the door for increased use of such devices for helping to meet training, evaluation and recent experience requirements.

Instructions

    • 1

Familiarize yourself with the most current information regarding various types of flight simulation devices, primarily the information contained in FAR Parts 60, 61, 141 and 142. Although various terms are sometimes used interchangeably, each has a unique, specific definition that is spelled out in these regulations. Also read Advisory Circular (AC) 61-136, "FAA Approval of Basic Aviation Training Devices (BATD) and Advanced Aviation Training Devices (AATD)," and search the Federal Register for past and current rules, proposed rules, commentary and articles that provide additional insight and explanations that can help in interpreting the regulations.

    • 2

Identify and note the specific flight simulation device used. Determine its type and status, whether flight simulator (FS), flight training device (FTD), basic or advanced aviation training device (BATD/AATD) or PC aviation training device (PCATD). If you are unable to determine this information on your own, ask your flight instructor and/or flight school or other designated representative to tell you, or ask to see a copy of the FAA certification or other documentation identifying the particular device and the purpose(s) for which it is certified.

    • 3

Designate a column or columns in your logbook for recording simulation time, and label them according to the type of device, for example FS, FTD, BATD or AATD. This isn't mandated by law but is a good idea in order to keep accurate records. If you have only one blank column, label it FS/FTD/ATD and specify in remarks which it is, or if you have no blank columns, consider splitting at least one column in order to be able to make separate entries for simulation time.

    • 4

Enter the simulation time in the appropriate column and any other applicable columns, such as simulated instrument, dual instruction, or night, along with the date, time, device identification and remarks. Hours logged toward a certificate, rating or evaluation must be in dual flight training given by an instructor, so be sure to also obtain an appropriate sign-off.
