Types
After completing the required amount of prerequisite training, student pilots must pass a 60-question multiple-choice exam. Students must score at least 70 percent to pass this test. Upon completing the written test, students must then take a practical exam in which they fly with an FAA certified examiner. The examiner will sit down and verbally quiz students before testing their ability to perform in the sky. Only students who pass these two tests are eligible to earn their private pilot certificates.
Topics
Students are evaluated during these written and practical tests on their knowledge of a wide variety of topics including basic aerodynamics, weather, navigation and FAA regulations. During the practical test, students must also demonstrate the ability to handle an aircraft and maintain a safe environment.
Function
These tests are in place to ensure that each and every licensed pilot meets the basic FAA requirements for skill and knowledge. They also help to ensure that every pilot knows the standard operation procedures of the skies, from navigating point-to-point to communicating and following the instructions of air traffic control.
