How to Set Up a Propeller on an RC Aircraft

For the most part, RC airplane propellers are ready to use when purchased. Props designed for nitro-powered engines require the same pre-flight preparation as props for electric motors. The propeller needs to be installed with the correct orientation to get the expected performance. Slight adjustments can be made to get the best performance from the prop.

Instructions

Determine the proper orientation of the propeller. The diameter and pitch will be printed on the front of the prop on the center hub or on one of the blades. An 8-inch prop with 6 degrees of pitch is displayed as "8x6."

    • 2

Mount the propeller on the balancer. The balancer holds the prop securely on a metal rod. The rod sits on two posts; the heavier side of the prop will sink below the rod. Use sandpaper to remove a little material from the heavier side of the prop until it is balanced.

Mount the prop to the motor shaft and secure with a nylon lock nut or a nut and lock washer. The printing on the prop should be readable from the front of the plane.
