How to Build Aircraft Models to Scale

Building a model airplane to scale and having it look like the real object requires research, time and patience. Allowing plenty of time to research the details of the actual plane, from the individual parts and the paint scheme, to the equipment needed, such as paints, brushes and hobby knives, will go a long way in successfully completing the project.

Things You'll Need

  • Fine tip and flat tip brushes
  • Airbrushes
  • Acrylic or enamel paints
  • Hobby knife
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Paint thinner
  • Mild detergent
  • Medium-grade sandpaper
  • Lint-free cloth or paper towels
  • Warm tap water

Instructions

    • 1

Begin your project by selecting a model to build and the scale you want it to be. Scale in mathematical terms is the relationship between the size of the model and the real thing is represents. For example, if the scale is 1/72, that means the real object is 72 times larger than the model. The lower the denominator number, the larger the model will be based on scale ratios of inches to a foot. A scale of 1/48 means that every 1/4 inch of the model is equal to 1 foot of the the real thing.

    • 2

Research the details of the airplane, for the shape, size and color schemes that comprise the original object by reading magazines, viewing photos and exploring the Internet before building your model.

    • 3

If building a model from a kit, carefully read the instruction manual that's provided to understand the steps you need to follow and the equipment necessary to complete the project.

    • 4

Do an inventory of all the parts and decals to make sure they're included with the kit by referring to the instruction manual. Contact the kit manufacturer if any parts or decals are missing. The manufacturer will send you a new kit or only the missing parts.

    • 5

Soak the parts in warm water with a mild detergent to remove any residue, such as oil used in the molding process. Remove and dry using a lint-free cloth or paper towel.

    • 6

Gather the parts trees and the equipment, such as brushes, paints and a hobby knife. Arrange them within reach so you don't waste time retrieving or looking for these items.

    • 7

Paint all parts on the parts trees the colors requested in the instruction manual. Allow to dry 24 hours before building the model.

    • 8

Begin the construction process by detaching the parts necessary for each step. Use sandpaper to smooth the rough edges from the detached parts from the tree. Glue the parts to the necessary locations within that step. For example, if the step calls for attaching a landing gear under the wing, follow those instructions to the letter. Glue should be applied sparingly, but enough to hold the part in place.

    • 9

Applying decals is the final step in completing your project. Refer to the manual for replacement of each decal. Cut out each individual decal and soak for about 30 seconds in lukewarm water to remove the waxes that hold them on the paper sheets. Apply the decal to the proper location on the model. Dab the decal with paper towel or cloth to remove excess water.

Inspect your model from all angles by holding it with both hands to see if any parts are loose or any decals are out of line. Feel free to add your own special touch to your model by adding an extra paint stripe or a different decal than those provided in the kit.
