How to Flare

Executing a flare is one of the most difficult aeronautical maneuvers that a novice pilot must learn. To land an airplane properly, however, it is critical to execute the flare correctly.

Executing a proper flare requires three things: proper airspeed, proper angle of attack and proper positioning.

Things You'll Need

  • Fixed-wing, nosewheel aircraft

Instructions

    • 1

Set the airplane flap settings to "Full," during the final approach. Adjust the trim wheel to maintain landing airspeed.

    • 2

Align the nose of the airplane with the runway centerline, and continue to maintain landing airspeed.

    • 3

Pull back gently on the flight stick or yoke (apply "back pressure") once the airplane reaches approximately 20 feet above ground. Continue to pull the stick or yoke back gently until the airplane is approximately one foot off the ground.

    • 4

Firmly pull the yoke or stick completely back, and continue to hold until a few seconds after the airplane has touched down.
