How to Do Acrobatics With a RC Plane

Doing acrobatics with an RC airplane is fun but requires some specific knowledge and lots of practice. Learning how to use ailerons is one of the first steps in the acrobatics process, as well as mixing ailerons with elevator functions. Here, we'll explore acrobatics with a standard aircraft-controls setup, using a mode 2 setup and a transmitter with a left stick throttle control. Be aware that in Europe, mode 1 is predominant, which has the throttle on the right stick control.

Things You'll Need

  • Acrobatic-capable RC airplane equipped with electric or 2 stroke/4 stroke gas/nitro engine
  • Transmitter
  • Servos
  • Receiver
  • Batteries (for transmitter and receiver)

Instructions

    • 1

Practice "The Hammerhead" as an easy, basic acrobatic maneuver. Fly the plane straight, level the pull back on the elevator control, and apply full power. Let the plane climb vertical without going on its back. Reduce throttle, get the elevator back to neutral, and use the full right or left rudder. When the airplane completes its 180-degree turn and is facing straight down, apply the throttle and elevator up to exit maneuver.

    • 2

Try the "Inside Loop." From a level altitude, preferably facing the wind, apply full throttle and pull the right control stick back. The airplane will start to climb and roll over on its back. Keep the right control stick back and close the throttle until you regain level flight altitude.

    • 3

Attempt the "Outside Loop." From a level flight altitude, and with plenty of altitude, push the right stick (elevator stick) forward and hold until the aircraft completes a full loop and returns to level flight. You might need to apply full power during the last part of the maneuver when the plane goes vertical.

    • 4

Do "The Roll." From straight and level flight, at one-half to three-quarter throttle, bank the airplane to the left and add a little bit of elevator to start the maneuver. Keep the ailerons deflected throughout the maneuver. When the aircraft is upside down, push up on the elevator control slightly to keep the roll on the same axis until the wings and nose are level again.

    • 5

Practice the "Snap-Roll." From straight and level flight altitude, fully deflect the left aileron and the left rudder at the same time. The plane will "snap" and roll rapidly to the left. This can be done to the right as well.

Start the "Immelmann Turn" maneuver as you would a normal inside loop. When you reach the top of the loop, roll the aircraft 180 degrees with the ailerons and enter straight, level flight. You now gained altitude and accomplished a 180-degree turn.
