How to Build a Bubble-Powered Rocket

Rocket kits line the shelves of hobby and science stores, from the simple to the elaborate. But there's no need to spend lots of money for a set of frustrating instructions that would stump an engineer. With a boost from Alka-Seltzer or another fizzy antacid tablet, you can make your own bubble-powered rocket. Follow these steps to blast off.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 sheet 8 1/2 inch by 11 inch paper
  • Scissors
  • Plastic 35mm film canister (from Fuji or another brand with a lid that snaps inside the rim)
  • Tape
  • Alka-Seltzer or other fizzy antacid tablets
  • Eye protection

Instructions

    • 1

Cut an 8 ½ inch by 11 inch piece of paper in half, length wise.

    • 2

Wrap the short side of one half of the paper around the film canister to make a tube 11 inches tall. The lid end of the canister should be at bottom of the tube. Tape the tube together, and tape it securely to the side of the film canister without taping the lid shut. You'll have your basic rocket shape.

    • 3

Cut the remaining piece of paper in half again. You will have 2 4-1/4-inch by 5-1/2-inch rectangles. Trace around a can or glass to draw a 4-inch diameter circle on one of the small rectangles. Cut out the circle.

    • 4

Make nose cone for your rocket. Make a cut in the paper. Tape the cone shut, and then tape the nose cone securely to the top of your rocket (the end opposite the film canister).

    • 5

Apply tail fins to your rocket if you want. The rocket will fly without them, but they look cool! Cut the remaining paper square in half to make 2 rectangles. Then cut each rectangle in half diagonally, making 4 triangular fins. Tape the fins to the sides of the rocket near the bottom, again taking care not to tape the film canister lid shut.

    • 6

Turn the rocket over and open the film canister. Fill it one-third full with warm water. Move to your launch area, wearing eye protection.

    • 7

Break the Alka-Seltzer tablet into 4 pieces. Drop the one piece of the fizzy tablet into the warm water in the film canister. Quickly snap on the lid, turn the rocket over, and set it down on a flat surface. Step back. The fizzing from the Alka-Seltzer will blast your bubble rocket into the air!
