How to Build a Goldenfinch Feeder

Goldfinches, small birds 4 to 5 inches in length, are like many birds attracted to backyard feeders -- they will eat many types of seed. But goldfinches in particular are attracted to nyger seed. The small seed placed in a tube feeder designed for the acrobatic birds will allow the finches to feed freely without larger birds chasing them away.

Things You'll Need

  • Long, slender plastic tube
  • Handsaw
  • 1/4-inch wood dowels
  • 1/4- and 1/8-inch drill bits
  • Pocketknife
  • Wire cutters
  • Stainless steel 19 gauge wire
  • Plastic floor mat
  • Rubber band

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the wood dowels using a handsaw. Cut the dowels to fit through the width of the tube and allow 3 inches on each end to extend outside of the tube.

    • 2

Drill holes for the dowels. Using a 1/4-inch drill bit, drill holes opposite of each other and push the dowels into the holes so they stick out 3 inches on each side. You want the dowels to be tight in the holes so the birds can perch on them and not twirl around.

    • 3

Cut small slits in the tube 2 inches below each perch. Using a sharp pocketknife, make the vertical slits 1/2 inch long. Goldfinches are acrobatic and will hang upside down to feed on seeds from flowers. This arrangement deters many other birds from feeding because they cannot easily perch upside down to feed.

    • 4

Cut a piece of stainless steel 19 gauge wire 8 inches in length with wire cutters. Bend the wire into a semicircle.

    • 5

Drill two holes near the top of the tube. Measuring down 3 inches and drill the holes opposite each other with a 1/8-inch drill bit.

    • 6

Push the wire through the holes, one end into each hole, and bend the ends inward and parallel with the feeder to keep the hanger from slipping out.

    • 7

Make a cap. Cut a circular piece of plastic floor mat 3 inches wider than the diameter of the tube. Fold the plastic over the top of the tube and secure with a heavy rubber band. The lid can be easily removed for cleaning and adding seed.
