How to Stop Birds From Hitting the Window Naturally

Birds, like all other creatures of the wild, are equipped with and survive by using instinct rather than logic. They cannot comprehend the ways or workings of humans. One type of human creation that confuses birds and often leads to their injuries or deaths -- and causes you lose money -- is the glass fixture. This includes glass windows, glass doors, glass areas of cars and other reflective or transparent objects. By making these areas more natural to the birds, you can reduce the amount of collisions they will have with the glass objects.

Instructions

  1. Reflection and Transparency

    • 1

Make the glass less reflective and transparent. Close any blinds or curtains on the inside of your window, especially if they are light in color. Any color will keep the glass from being transparent, but birds will also have trouble seeing their reflection if a white hued shade is backing the window.

    • 2

Cover the outside of the window with a thin rope or net chain, a film that gives a "sandblasting" appearance or screens to reduce reflection and eliminate transparency.

    • 3

Soap or whitewash your windows. This is the least attractive method, but will it get the job done.

    Decorations

    • 4

Decorate the area. Wind chimes, vines, ribbons and suction cup silhouettes all move when the wind blows and will alert the bird that something is there as well as cover up parts of the window. In addition, using natural elements as decoration around the outside of your window will help the bird to feel "at home" and cause it to prepare to land ahead of time.

    • 5

Move any bird-feeding devices, fountains or other attractants close to the windows that birds usually fly into. Not only does this deter them from building up momentum after leaving these objects, it also gives them more time to notice decorations.

    • 6

Plant any trees or gardens away from your house. Birds can fly high in the sky and may look down and assume your plant life extends to the inside of your house, even if the plants are small.

    • 7

Build a decorative and protective net, shrouded with twigs or vines, and attach it diagonally from the top of the window to the ground or a post in the yard.
