How to Make a Loon Call

The loon is a type of diving bird found in North America. Dieting primarily on fish, this bird will dive from the air and swim underwater to catch its prey. The wailing sound a Loon makes can be mimicked by humans by clasping two hands together and blowing across the opening between the thumbs. With some patience and practice a person can mimic the wild call of the Common Loon.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the hands apart and make a "C" out of each hand. The C-shape should feel like a person is holding an imaginary pole.

    • 2

Bring the left hand to the right hand while maintaining the "C" shape. The thumbs should be straight.

    • 3

Adjust the hands, with the right hand holding the left hand maintaining the C-shape. Seat the fingers against each other, making an airtight seal. If you have large hands, fold the pinky finger inside the open space within the hands. Leave a small space between the thumbs for airflow.

    • 4

Press the thumbs firmly against the left hand. Place the lips over the thumb knuckles leaving a small space below for air to escape as this should be the only space airflow should occur. Blow air down and across the small opening. Adjust the space between the thumbs and the angle at which the mouth touches the thumbs until a wailing sound is achieved.
