How to Use a Duck Whistle

Hunters and bird watchers alike use duck whistles, or duck calls, to attract and flush out ducks. By using these duck whistles properly, specific duck calls can be mimicked. Mating calls can be used to attract male or female ducks. Social calls can be used to draw ducks closer. Antagonizing calls can be used to scare ducks away. Duck whistles make ducks believe you are one of them, and allows you to manipulate their behavior.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold your duck whistle with your trigger hand, so you can hold your gun or other objects freely in the other hand.

    • 2

Place your lips on the whistle as if you are drinking from a soda bottle. Lip placement is important for achieving the correct sound.

    • 3

Exhale air from your diaphragm, into the duck whistle. Breath expelled from the diaphragm instead of the chest will produce a better duck noise.

    • 4

Practice different quacks. Say "dwit" or "kwit" while exhaling from your diaphragm into the duck whistle to create a quacking noise.

    • 5

Learn different specific duck calls by researching what type of ducks you may encounter in your environment by talking to other duck hunters, bird watchers or specialists.
