How to Make a Duck Call Out of a Comb

While professionally made duck calls are effective, they can be very expensive. Much simpler duck calls can be made easily at home. The advantage of a duck call made from a comb is that the call will react to the vibrations made by your mouth, and therefore the sound that is made can be tailored and made specific to the type of duck you wish to call. Tissue paper can also be used to make an effective duck call, but this is less durable and won't last as long if taken out and used in the field.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a small plastic pocket comb. The best type of comb will be about 6 inches long and have medium to fine, springy plastic teeth.

    • 2

Measure out a sheet of wax paper approximately as long as the comb and slightly wider than twice the width of the comb. Wax paper is used because it is light enough to vibrate like tissue paper but will not get wet and become damaged by the moisture of your mouth.

    • 3

Fold the wax paper in half along its width and place the comb inside, teeth downward. Hold the wax paper together and press it against the comb at one end, using your thumb and forefinger to keep it pressed.

    • 4

Raise the comb and wax paper to your lips. Purse your lips and hum so that the vibrations of the lips are in contact with the wax paper at the back of the comb.

    • 5

Listen to the quacking sound the vibrating comb and wax paper make. Remember, the items are not "making" the sound but merely amplifying and distorting the sound made by your lips. So listen to the noises of the ducks you are trying to call and try to mimic their sounds through the comb and wax paper.

Attach a very small amount of glue to where the two sides of the wax paper meet and press the two sides together. This will connect the two sides of the paper and make the comb duck call slightly more durable.
