How to Call Ducks & Geese

Learn to make the basic duck honk. This is done by blowing through the reed to mimic the honking sound of a duck that attracts other ducks. Blow the reed steadily and firmly. Always start with a high note and descend to a lower note. This is how ducks communicate in the wild.

Learn to make the duck and goose cluck by blowing a short, firm blast on the short reed duck caller. The cluck sound is usually used to hold the attention of ducks, and to make them feel that there is no danger around.

Experiment with different pressures and lip positions on the short reed caller. Play different duck calls on your computer and try and mimic those calls with your short reed caller.

Practice the different calls, both at home and near wild ducks and geese. Each species of duck and goose has a slightly different call, so to effectively draw the attention of a particular species of duck you must learn to mimic the sounds that that species makes. This can only be done by listening to the ducks and geese as they call each other.

Blow the call when the ducks are flying in a circular pattern as if to land. Do not call the ducks when they are flying toward you. Use the whistle to call birds that start to fly away.

Blow short, quick calls to prevent birds from flying away. If your calls do not seem to be working, try to vary the sequence of calls or the pitch of the sound that you make with the call.
