How to Tell if a Humming Bird is a Male or Female

Take a look at a few distinguishing physical features in the Ruby-throated hummingbird to see if it is female or male. If the hummingbird's gorget (throat) appears black under certain lighting conditions it is a male. If it is a female it will be white. Look at the breast of the hummingbird. A female has a white breast. Take notice to the hummingbird's tail. A male has a forked tail with no white. A female hummingbird has a rounded tail with white tips. Examine the size of the hummingbird. If the humming bird appears smaller than another hummingbird around it, it is surely a male. Male hummingbirds are smaller than females.

Discern between a male magnificent hummingbird and a female magnificent bird. The males have metallic green throats (may appear black in poor lighting). They also have a black breast, purple crown, gray under tail coverts and a black forked tail. The under part of a female is dull gray and they have dark, rounded tails with grayish-white corners.

Identify the sex of a Blue-throated hummingbird by examining the throat. The males have a blue throat that appears black in poor lighting conditions. Female Blue-throated hummingbirds are similar to the female magnificent Hummingbird but they have large white tips on their tail and a white malar streak.

Distinguish the male Rufous hummingbird from the female by the bright orange coloring on its back as well as itsbelly. The female has a greenish upper part and a grayish-white throat. The female's throat has a bit of reddish-orange on it as well.

Figure out the sex of an Anna's Hummingbird by taking a look at a few defining features. The male has a metallic green back, a dark rose-red crown and throat and a grayish breast. The female has a green back, grayish-white breast, a white throat with red spots and white tips on the outer tail feathers.

Observe the hummingbird's behavior. In all types of hummingbirds, males tend to be very aggressive. They are territorial and will shoo any male that comes close. The males will also attack a female hummingbird if he has not mated with her. It is only after he has mated with her that she will be allowed to come into his territory.
