How to Make Wild Bird Seed Suet Cakes

Attract colorful birds to your house during the winter and help the birds make it through the cold months by making bird seed suet cakes. Birds and squirrels love these easy-to-make cakes. You can make a big batch of the suet cakes and store them in the freezer to feed the birds all winter long.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 cup crunchy peanut butter
  • 1 cup lard or shortening
  • 2 cups oatmeal
  • 2 cups cornmeal
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup wheat germ
  • 1/2 cup hulled sunflower eeds (no salt)
  • 1/ cup chopped dried cranberries
  • Saucepan
  • 5-6 plastic sandwich containers lined with foil

Instructions

      Assemble all ingredients, chop the cranberries and line the sandwich containers with foil. You can use raisins or dried currants in place of cranberries if you choose.

      Melt the lard (or shortening) and peanut butter in a medium saucepan.

      Add the rest of the ingredients to the pan and mix well.

      Scoop the mixture into the prepared sandwich containers and allow them to cool and harden. You can set them outside if its cold. Otherwise, put them in the refrigerator for about an hour or two to speed up the cooling process.

      Remove the suet cakes from the containers after they have completely hardened. Wrap them in plastic wrap and store them in the freezer until ready for use.
