How to Make Homemade Hummingbird Food

Hummingbirds are easy to attract with food source since they need to eat for between 30 and 60 seconds approximately seven times per hour. They don't eat much, of course, but a hummingbird feeder and a simple sugar solution should be enough to draw them to your yard.

Things You'll Need

  • Hummingbird feeder
  • Granulated sugar
  • Water
  • Saucepan
  • Stirring utensil

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a saucepan with water and boil rapidly for five minutes, then remove from the stove. This eliminates the fluoride and chlorine in the tap water.

    • 2

Add granulated sugar to the cooling water. You want to use about one-fifth as much sugar as you did water. Stir until the sugar fully dissolves.

    • 3

Make sure the mixture has cooled to room temperature and pour into the feeder.
