How to Identify North American Geese

North American Geese are part of the Anatidae biological family that includes swans and ducks. These birds can float on water, have webbed feet for swimming and can dive shallow in water. There are multiple kinds of geese, but they all share a few of the same characteristics. Here's how to identify them.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider the location. A variety of geese live all over the world, but generally they all live in cool places during the hot summer and warmer places during the winter. Geese are waterbirds, so they always live near water. Although they may wander a bit to graze, they never get too far from water.

    • 2

Look at the size of the bird. Geese of all species are medium to large-sized birds. They are smaller than swans, but larger than ducks and chickens.

    • 3

Look at the color. North America is home to gray, black and white geese. The most common are Canadian geese that are gray with black heads and necks. Bird color can sometimes be deceiving depending on the luster of the feathers and the light shining on them. Note any distinguishing marks.

    • 4

Look at the shape of the bill. Most geese have longer, rounded bills that are shallow.

    • 5

Observe the wing size. Their wings are large enough for them to fly large bodies very high and long distances.

    • 6

Listen to the noises geese make. They do not sing or chirp. Often, they do not make much noise at all. When threatened, they hiss. They may communicate with each other during migration with loud and deep honk sounds.
