Determine when to hang your hummingbird feeder by consulting a migration map (see Resources below). Hummingbirds typically migrate north in the early spring, except for some regions of the southwest where they can be seen all year long.
Buy or make a hummingbird feeder if you don't already have one. Hummingbirds are attracted to red, so choose a feeder with plenty of red pieces.
Scout out a location that is easily visible from many different directions. This will make it easy for the hummingbirds to find the feeder. A sunny spot with flowers nearby is ideal.
Remember to put the feeder somewhere where you'll be able to see it. This could be in a tree outside a window or around a deck or patio. Hummingbirds are fearless and your presence will not disturb them.
Hang the feeder far above the ground. A feeder will have a hook or string to allow you to attach it to a tree limb. An eye-hook can be screwed into a tree or a soffit near a window, and you can hang a feeder on these.
Fill the feeder with hummingbird nectar around the time when they are scheduled to arrive in your area. Refill the feeder as it runs out, and clean it in hot tap water between each filling.
Take the feeder down after the hummingbirds migrate south. This will be around the middle of October. If you live in an area where the climate stays warm year-round, leave the feeder out all year.
