Buying a Metal Detector
Use a detector with a higher operating frequency or kilohertz (khz) that is specifically designed to locate gold. This will give you a better chance at finding gold, and save time while hunting.
Specifics
Choose a detector able to detect nuggets through heavy types of soil. Soil content varies, and a quality metal detector should be able to detect gold nuggets through the heaviest mineralization content in soil.
Earphones
Pick quality earphones when nugget hunting. Choose earphones that come with a built-in booster that adds depth capabilities to the detector, and enhances the metallic sound the gold makes when the detector is being passed over it. Use a cover coil to protect the coil on the metal detector while in use.
Heavy-duty Digging Tools
Use a heavy-duty digging tool or rake to eliminate soil from the area you are hunting. Drag the rake over the area a few inches at a time. This action enables the electronic prospector on the metal detector to locate deeper buried nuggets.
Where to Search
Search for gold with your metal detector in desert areas where there is exposed bedrock. Gold nuggets are also found in patches. Keep looking in the same area where you find one, for there could be many more in that area as well.
