How to Tumble and Polish Kyanite

Kyanite, also called disthene, is a striated blue or green crystal that is used in making jewelry, such as necklaces or as a light reflector with porcelain artwork. It is a combination of two minerals: sillimanite and andalusite. You can bring out its beauty by using a tumbler, which is a box, usually in hexagonal in shape, that rotates so the kyanite or other stones make contact with more surface areas as they roll.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. How to Tumble Kyanite

    • 1

Mix silicon carbide with equal parts water. Place it in the tumbler cavity.

    • 2

Add the kyanite, turn on the tumbler and allow it to tumble for 24 hours.

    • 3

Stop the tumbler and drain the solution. Replace the solution with a more diluted solution of 1 part silicon carbide and 1 1/2 parts water, place it in the tumbler cavity and tumble for 24 hours.

    • 4

Repeat Steps 5 to 7, but use a silicon carbide solution of one part silicon carbide and two parts water.

    • 5

Perform one last drain and tumble with a diluted solution of one part silicon carbide and three parts water. Tumble for 24 hours.

    How to Polish Kyanite

    • 6

Perform the tumble process in Section 1 until the stone is smooth and corners and sharp edges have been eliminated.

    • 7

Remove the Kyanite from the tumbler.

    • 8

Dip the leather polishing rag in silicon dioxide. Work the leather polishing rag over the stone. Repeat until the stone has a shiny appearance.

    • 9

Rub the felt polishing rag over the stone to remove any residue left from the tumble.
