Outdoors
The great outdoors makes for many great geocache hiding spots. Venture out to large state parks to make it challenging for searchers, or try hiding your geocaches in local parks and cemeteries. A hanging, wooden birdhouse makes a creative hiding spot that non-geocachers are sure not to suspect, while tree branches and densely forested areas are also suitable.
Hidden Gems
When hiding a geocache, consider all of the small, unknown areas of your town or city that others may or may not be familiar with. For example, stash your geocache in a hidden gem of a location such as an old, rickety house with an exciting back story; you can then include this story in your geocache for other players to discover. Another option, for example, is a hidden monument. Choose a place that is special to you that you would like to share with other local geocachers.
Your Home
While this isn't for the faint of heart, hiding geocaches around your home, such as in your backyard, can be interesting and exciting. Include clear rules in the description of your geocache, and avoid hiding your treasures inside your living space. Having geocachers venturing into your front or backyard can lead to meeting a wide variety of new people who have the same hobby as you, and is ideal, for example, if you have recently moved to a new area. It is advisable to speak with your neighbors about your plans so that they do not become concerned about the number of people entering your property.
Residential Areas
Residential areas are another hiding option for geocaches. In addition to your own home, consider places such as local businesses, shopping malls, street corners, elementary school grounds and college and university campuses. These hiding places are best left to the more experienced geocachers, as it is challenging to maintain the secrecy of geocaching in exposed areas.
Tips
There are also certain hiding spots to avoid when participating in geocaching. Do not hide geocaches in or around the homes of wild animals, such as bird's nests; the extra traffic geocaches cause in these areas can be damaging to nature. Refrain from hiding geocaches on historical and archaeological sites to avoid an influx of people and cars to these areas. Be aware of the fact that, if you are hiding a geocache in plain sight, non-players may find your activity, or that of the searchers, suspicious. You must also consider accessibility. Choose a location for your geocache that is relatively obscure so that an individual who is not playing the game does not come across it. Your geocache should not be visible to individuals passing by and should be hidden away from places such as busy roads.
