How to Make a Big Metal Detector

As one of the few remaining unexplored frontiers left in the world, the ground beneath our feet remains the subject of discovery for expert treasure hunters and casual hobbyists alike. Whether searching for valuable gem deposits or buried artifacts of the past, metal detectors help us see the unseen, and you can construct simple handheld metal detection devices out of materials that our modern world has deemed almost obsolete, such as an old transistor radio.

Things You'll Need

  • Small transistor radio with AM frequency
  • Handheld calculator
  • Fasteners (tape, Velcro or nylon straps)
  • Small, flat plastic board
  • Plastic, wooden or metal broomstick

Instructions

    • 1

Fasten the AM radio face to face with the calculator, using Velcro straps or sturdy tape.

    • 2

Fasten both items to a flat plastic board with Velcro or tape, placing the backside of the calculator against the plastic.

    • 3

Tune the radio to the highest frequency possible without a signal. This should produce an audible static.

    • 4

Test the device by sweeping it over household metal objects. The static should increase, creating an increasingly rapid beeping noise.

    • 5

Fasten an unused broom or mop handle to the opposite side of the plastic board from the connected radio and calculator. An adjustable handle is ideal, but any handle that extends naturally to the ground from a standing position will do.

    • 6

Begin treasure hunting. Once you've ensured the reliability of the signal, you can take the device outdoors or anywhere metal objects may be hidden.
