How to Make a Geocaching Container

Geocaching is a global treasure hunting hobby where people hide containers, called caches, all over the world. Other people attempt to locate the caches by using a handheld GPS unit and tracking the cache's coordinates. Geocaching containers can range in size from a few centimeters in diameter up to 5 gallon cans. They can be camouflaged in a variety of ways, making geocaching a unique and challenging hobby for people of all skill levels and abilities. There are many ways to make a geocaching container.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the size of the geocaching container you would like to make. A commonly used container is a 35MM plastic film canister, available on eBay. It is also common to use small plastic storage containers with lids.

    • 2

Print the required sign-in log that must go in your container, available here: www.techblazer.com/geocaching-log-sheets/. Roll up the log and place it inside the container.

    • 3

Ensure that the inside of your container is waterproof. It is helpful to place the log and any other contents of the container inside a plastic zippered bag, and then place the entire bag inside of the container. This ensures that the log and other contents stay dry in wet weather so that geocachers are able to sign the log without difficulty.

    • 4

Design your container with the desired level of camouflage. It is customary to make your container blend in with its surroundings. For example, if you plan on hiding your container in the woods, you may glue sticks and twigs to the container. If you plan to hide the container near rocks or wood chips, glue the same rocks or wood chips to the container. The level of camouflage is entirely up to you.

Place your container in its desired hiding spot. Ensure that it isn't easily viewed by people passing by, or it may be stolen or vandalized. This is referred to as "muggled" in the geocaching community.
