How to Set Up My First HF Wire Antenna

Ham radio operators have to start somewhere. Always in search of the better antenna, many begin with a simple high frequency horizontal line array. This simple antenna design doesn't even require vertical elevation to work, since the antenna radiates from the end. Basic tools and the right wire will get you transmitting and receiving in both permanent and temporary field installations.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire snips
  • 300 feet of telephone wire
  • Wire strippers
  • 8 inch magnetic core ring
  • Soldering iron
  • Lead-free solder
  • Electrical tape
  • RG-59 coaxial cable
  • Coaxial strip tool
  • Coaxial compression fitting
  • Compression crimp connector

Instructions

    • 1

Strip 12 inches of outer insulation from one end of the telephone wire.

    • 2

Choose two of the four internal wires to serve as your negative group. The other two will be positive.

    • 3

Wind the negative grouping 11 times around the edge of the magnetic core.

    • 4

Wind the positive wires eight times around to overlap the first pairing.

    • 5

Tape these wires in place with your electrical tape.

    • 6

Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from the four conductors.

    • 7

Twist the positive wires together into one pairing. Twist the negative wires together to form the second one.

    • 8

Cut a length of coaxial cable as needed to serve as your feed line. This connects to your radio.

    • 9

Strip an inch of insulation from the antenna end of the coaxial lead.

    • 10

Twist the inner braided shield with your fingers to form a wire-shaped conductor.

    • 11

Solder the copper center conductor on the coaxial cable to the two positive wires.

    • 12

Solder the twisted braided shield of the coax to the negative pair of wires you designated earlier.

    • 13

Tape the two wire pairs independently to insulate them from each other and from contaminants, including moisture.

    • 14

Strip an inch of insulation from the radio end of the coaxial lead.

    • 15

Lay the braided shield back against the outer jacket of the coaxial cable.

    • 16

Push the compression fitting over the end of the coaxial cable and lay the assembly into the compression crimp tool.

    • 17

Squeeze the handles to pop the plastic and metal components of the fitting together to form a seal.

    • 18

Extend the wire as far as needed along the ground and leave it on the ground.

    • 19

Connect the coaxial lead to the radio.

    • 20

Test your signal strength and adjust the antenna as needed.
