How to Install an Open Wire Fed Antenna Through Metal Siding

Open wire feedlines are two wires configured in a parallel configuration. Each conductor is separated by a glass or plastic insulator, keeping the two conductors isolated from one another to ensure proper signal conducting. Open wire feedlines convert to coaxial for connection to the Ham radio inside the structure, offering a quick and standard connection point. If you need to punch though metal siding to get the coaxial cable from the feedline to the radio, there are certain steps you should follow.

Things You'll Need

  • Drill
  • 1/2 inch drill bit
  • Plastic weather bushings
  • Plastic coaxial clips
  • Sheet metal screws
  • Philips drill bit

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the spot on the outside of the structure closest to the installed location of your radio inside the structure.

    • 2

Drill from the inside out through the wall and siding, using the 1/2 inch drill bit.

    • 3

Slide the coaxial cable leading from the feedline through the open flat end of the weather bushing. Push the bushing into the hole until the flat cap is flush with the siding.

    • 4

Continue to feed the coaxial cable into the structure. Leave 6 inches formed into a "J" shape on the outside, forming a drip line. This keeps moisture from entering the structure.

    • 5

Secure slack coaxial cable with sheet metal screw mount plastic coaxial clips. Seal the edges surrounding the bushing and the coaxial cable entry hole with silicone caulk.
