How to Set the Speech Processor on an Icom 730 Ham Radio

Transmit your voice with the Icom 730 ham radio using the device̵7;s built-in speech processor while you talk into the included microphone. The 730̵7;s speech processor reduces audio distortion, giving your voice transmissions greater power when you speak with fellow ham radio enthusiasts. To use the speech processor, you must adjust a few settings on the device to achieve optimal voice quality during your radio transmissions.

Instructions

      Press the ̶0;Power̶1; switch to turn on the Icom 730. Plug the microphone into the microphone input jack on the front of the unit. Put on your headphones and plug the headphone cable into the matching jack, located next to the microphone jack.

      Rotate the ̶0;Mic Gain Control̶1; knob on the front of the unit until it points to the 12 o̵7;clock position at the top of the dial.

      Rotate the ̶0;RF Power Control̶1; knob completely counterclockwise.

      Lift the access cover on the top of the unit to expose the speech processor switch. Turn this switch to the ̶0;On̶1; position.

      Press the ̶0;Transmit/Receive̶1; switch to set the 730 to transmit mode. The red Transmit indicator lights. Press the ̶0;Transmit/Receive̶1; switch again to toggle it back to receive mode, which causes the Transmit indicator to turn off.

      Rotate the ̶0;RF Power Control̶1; knob clockwise as you speak into the microphone. Continue this adjustment until the RF Peak output power reaches the strength you desire; typically, this should be between 10 and 100 watts.
