How to Repair a Realistic Navaho TRC-431 With a Schematic

The Realistic Navaho TRC-431 is a citizen's band radio manufactured by Radio Shack. The TRC-431 is a four-channel, 40-watt CB transceiver that can be used as either a base or mobile unit to be mounted inside a car or truck. From time to time, components inside the CB may go bad and need to be replaced. The owner's manual of the CB comes with a complete electronic schematic for the unit, which can be used to help while making repairs.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the power button to make sure the CB is turned on and that the volume is turned up if there seems to be no power or if there is trouble with receiving.

    • 2

Check the inline fuse if the unit is connected to a 12-volt DC supply line in a vehicle. Do this by unplugging the power cord from the back of the unit and opening the plastic inline fuse holder by pulling it apart by hand. Slip a new fuse in and plug the cable back in to test the unit out.

    • 3

Disconnect all cords and cables from the back side of CB. Remove the vase screws on the back and lift the case cover completely off by hand.

    • 4

Visually inspect the circuit board for components that have completely become detached from the circuit board, or that appear loose or damaged. Components that look burned of discolored may have shorted out.

    • 5

Plug the soldering iron in and use it to de-solder to old solder connections if the component is still mounted in the circuit board. If a component has completely come loose, read the component's value, which will typically be measured in Ohms for resistors and diodes or Farads for capacitors.

    • 6

Cross reference the piece with the circuit board schematic for a loose component to find where it should be mounted.

    • 7

Place the component into its proper place on the circuit board using the schematic as a guide. Melt a small dab of solder to the component's connectors.

    • 8

Replace the cover and cover retaining screws with the screwdriver. Re-connect all power cords and antenna cables.
