How to Broadcast Radio on the Net

Since the advent of the World Wide Web, more and more broadcast services have transitioned from older models of distribution to online distribution. In addition to television and movie services, many radio broadcasts have also made the transition to a Web-based platform. Online radio and podcasts allow both amateur and professional broadcasters to share their programs with a large audience through the Web.

Instructions

    • 1

Install audio recording and editing software on your computer. In addition to purchasable software packages such as WavePad and Sound Studio, many downloadable software packages such as Audacity provide basic sound recording and editing tools for free.

    • 2

Set up your recording studio. This can be as simple as a preinstalled microphone on your computer or as complicated as a dedicated studio space with eggshell soundproofing and a sound mixer.

    • 3

Record the program you wish to broadcast on the Web. You will probably need to practice what you're saying before you record the final program, so that you can minimize the amount of post-recording editing.

    • 4

Edit your program for both content and length with your installed editing software. Though online radio programs and podcasts vary in length from a couple of minutes to several hours, Michael Geoghegan W. and Dan Klass recommend programs between 10 and 20 minutes, with three or four distinct sections or segments.

    • 5

Save your edited and finalized program as an MP3 or MP4 file. Though various online broadcasting services are able to host alternative file types, both MP3 and MP4 are the most widely used and easily converted file types for online radio and podcast broadcasting.

    • 6

Identify the online radio or podcast hosting service you will use to host your program. As with recording and editing software, these online services vary from pay-for-hosting sites like Libsyn, LibsynPro and Hipcast to free hosting sites such as Ourmedia and MyPodcast. Though they offer hosting services for free, free hosting sites often limit the file numbers and file sizes of podcasts or radio programs, which may affect how many programs you're able to offer at any one time.

Upload your MP3 or MP4 program file to the hosting service's website. This process will depend upon the service itself.
