The Type of Keyer Stereo or Mono Jack to Use on an Icom 718

The Icom IC-718 is an intermediate high-frequency amateur radio transceiver. It is capable of transmitting and receiving in the 160-meter through 10-meter amateur bands via single-sideband, AM, digital modes and CW (Morse code). The IC-718 features a built-in keyer circuit which, when used with an appropriate keyer paddle, automatically forms the dots and dashes during CW operation.
  1. Paddle Key Connection

    • The rear-panel key connection accepts a 1/4-inch (6.5mm) stereo headphone plug. The sleeve is the common connection. The "Dot" paddle connects to the tip, and "Dash" connects to the ring.

    Straight Key Connection

    • Straight key operation also uses a stereo headphone plug. The key base connects to the sleeve, and the key positive connects to the tip. The ring is not connected. When using a straight key, the user disables the internal keyer via the control menu.

    External Keyer Connection

    • If the user wishes to use an external keyer such as a memory keyer (which can send station identification and other data automatically), the menu setup and plug connection is the same as for a straight key.

    Front-Panel Microphone Connector

    • A menu option allows the "Up" and "Down" buttons on the microphone to function as a key paddle. The 8-pin microphone connector can also serve as a paddle connection where common connects to Pin 6, "Dot" connects to Pin 3, and "Dash" connects to Pin 3 through a 470 ohm resistor.

    13-Pin Accessory Connector

    • The 13-pin rear-panel accessory connector can serve as a connection for a straight key, with no accommodation for a paddle. This connection would be useful if the operator wished to have both a paddle (for use with the internal keyer) and a straight key and/or memory keyer connected at the same time. In this case, the paddle key would connect normally via the key jack and the straight key, memory keyer or both would connect to the accessory jack Pin 2 for common and Pin 3 for key positive.
