How to Use Electronic Keyer

The electric keyer is a device used to transmit the dots and dashes of Morse code. Developed by Samuel Morse in 1844, the code assigns a specific dot or dash pattern for each letter. Older electric keyers were simple two-prong electrodes. The operator made a tone when pressing the top portion of the keyer. Amateur radio enthusiasts still use Morse code to communicate. Electric keyers are most comfortable and efficient when the paddles are horizontal rather than vertical.

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn the keyer on.

    • 2

Rest your hand on the work surface, palm down.

    • 3

Place your thumb on one paddle and your index finger on the other.

    • 4

Push the right paddle to the left and the keyer generates a series of dashes, which are longer tones.

    • 5

Push the left paddle to the right and the keyer generates dots -- short bursts of sound.

    • 6

Press both together and the keyer alternates dots with dashes.

    • 7

Press the keys in the proper combination for each letter of your message.
