How to Clean Corroded RF Tuning Capacitors

Restoring antique radios can be a rewarding hobby. You take something that is old and useless, then make it look new and get it to actually work. These projects take a lot of patience and- some of the old parts, such as the RF tuning capacitors, can be pretty corroded. There are many possible ways to clean the capacitors. The key is to avoid corroding the metal further with harsh cleaners, and to clean in between the moving plates without scratching the metal.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the capacitors from the radio housing.

    • 2

Put each capacitor in an ultrasonic cleaner -- the same type used to clean jewelry. Fill the cleaner with warm water before beginning. Start the cleaner and keep an eye on the capacitor. Take the capacitor out when it looks clean, and allow it to dry. If you leave it in too long, you may pit the surface.

    • 3

Use a bristle brush and warm soapy water if you do not have access to an ultrasonic cleaner. Use pipe cleaners to get in between the capacitor plates if needed. Rinse off all the soap when done and allow the capacitor to dry. You can also use a solvent such as isopropyl alcohol or brake cleaner instead of soapy water. Allow the capacitor to completely dry when done.

Put machine oil on the bearings after the capacitors are dry.
