How to Adjust the Squelch on the VX-8R

Vertex Standard's Yaesu VX-8R amateur handheld transceiver measures 2.4 by 3.7 by 0.9 inches and includes Bluetooth, wide-band receiver, barometer and thermometer sensor functions, and dual-band operation. Its compact size, along with multiple features, has given way to buttons and pre-sets, replacing the knob-operated common radio functions. Squelch is one of the pre-sets. Squelch allows you to mute background noise when no signal is being received. Setting the squelch also significantly lowers the radio's battery consumption.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the "FW" button and then the "Moni/T-Call" button. It's on the left side of the radio, not on the front panel. The Set Mode item "92:SQL LEVEL" will appear on the display.

    • 2

Rotate the dial to the point where background noise is eliminated. It's usually around "3" or "4." The level will be displayed on the display, for example "Level 3." This point is where the VX-8R is at maximum sensitivity to weak signals.

    • 3

Press the Push-to-Talk switch to save the setting and resume radio operation.
