How to Change an Amateur Prefix Number

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) allows individual or club amateur radio licensees to change their call sign to a "Vanity" call sign. Certain call signs are not available, but the prefix number can usually be changed. The first part of an FCC-generated call relates to the initial address of the license-holder. For example, "W6" indicates California. You may want to change that if you move. You can also change your call sign, including the prefix if you simply don't like it.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the amateur numerical prefix that you'd like to obtain. Some call signs aren't available in certain letter or numerical combinations and many are already taken, so create a list of options.

    • 2

Perform a search for licenses that have already been issued at the FCC website (see Resources). Other databases available on the National Association for Amateur Radio website (arrl.org) can give you ideas, or provide lists of expired call signs that may be suitable.

    • 3

Apply for the vanity call sign with the changed amateur prefix number by mail or electronically online by filling out the FCC forms and paying the fee (wireless.fcc.gov/uls). The regulatory fee can be refunded if the application is unsuccessful.
