How to Install a Double Bazooka Antenna

The double bazooka antenna may be an excellent single band antenna, but you will get even better results with proper installation. Like most amateur or ham radio antennas, it is positioned outside the home to maximize reception. The actual location that you select to mount your antenna will also have an effect on its performance.

Things You'll Need

  • 30-foot push-up pole
  • 2 10-foot push-up poles
  • 30 feet of wax-coated lashing cord
  • Pocket knife
  • 50 ohm coaxial feed line
  • Mallet

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the best location to mount your antenna. Verify you have at least thirty-five feet of vertical clearance at your proposed location. Leave at least ten feet of horizontal space between other antennas and the spot for your double bazooka antenna.

    • 2

Hang the antenna's apex from the eye-hook which came already installed on your antenna's "T" mold located at the center of your antenna.

    • 3

Extend your antenna's ends to form an inverted "V" shape.

    • 4

Cut two four-foot lengths of cord with your pocket knife. Wrap your wax-coated lashing cord around one of your antenna ends. Then, wrap that same length of cord around one of the 10 foot push up poles so that the two are pulled together by the cord. Tie off the ends so that the two pieces are lashed together. Repeat the same lashing process with your second antenna end and the other 10 foot push up pole.

    • 5

Cut two feet of cord. Tie your antenna's "T" mold to the top of the longest push up pole by wrapping the cord around around both objects. Tie off the ends for a secure fit.

    • 6

Attach your 50 ohm coaxial feed line to the "T" mold by screwing the coaxial connector into the "T" mold's coaxial jack. Lash the coaxial cable to your 30-foot push-up pole every ten feet by wrapping your cord around the cable a few times then tying it off. Use about two feet of cord at each increment.

    • 7

Drive your push up poles into the ground at your selected mounting location. Secure each push-up pole by attaching the guy stakes and guy wires that came with your poles. Use your mallet to drive each stake into the ground. Each pole will have one guy stake.

Lead the unmounted end of your 50 ohm coaxial feed line into your house. Attach it to your receiver. Supply power to your receiver to test your double bazooka boom antenna.
