How to Install a Discone Antenna

For both amateur and professional radio operators alike, a discone antenna is a favorite for tuning in to other stations and broadcasting a signal. The discone antenna uses a disc at the top and a cone underneath to provide complete 360-degree coverage, meaning you won't have to point it in a specific direction to pick up a signal. Installing the antenna to work with your radio system can be done in just a few hours.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place two support brackets on the support tube by sliding them over the top of the tube and tightening them down using the supplied screws and nuts. Position one bracket near the center of the tube and the other at the bottom. Do not fully tighten the nuts yet.

    • 2

Slide the coaxial cable through the tube all the way from the bottom to the top. At the top, pull the coaxial cable through and attach it to the input at the bottom of the antenna assembly. When it is secure, insert the assembly into the top of the tube and secure it with provided screws and nuts.

    • 3

Place one provided nut on the threaded end of each one of the antenna rods. On top of the antenna assembly will be a bolt for each rod. Thread the open end of the nuts on the rods onto the bolts and tighten each one down with the adjustable wrench.

    • 4

Screw the coil assembly to the top of the antenna assembly by hand. Insert the whip assembly into the top of the coil assembly and tighten it down with the adjustable wrench.

    • 5

Slide the mounting brackets over the antenna tube and place the provided U-bolt on the other side. Secure the brackets in place with the provided nuts and tighten them fully with the wrench. Go back and finish tightening the nuts on the support brackets with the wrench.

Secure the mounting brackets to the surface you wish to mount the antenna with mounting screws and the power drill. When the antenna is secure, run the coaxial cable from the bottom of the tube to the receiver or transmitter.
