How to Build 900 MHz Omni Antenna

The 900 MHz radio band is a relatively new range of frequencies for the amateur radio hobbyist. The 900 MHz spectrum affords the ham radio operator freedom to experiment with various applications and devices because of its novelty and shorter wavelength. Build this simple omni-directional antenna designed for the 902 to 928 MHz range, and tune to a new frontier in ham radio.

Things You'll Need

Coaxial cable, RG-58, 3 feet
Electrical tape
Utility knife
Coaxial cable crimping tool

Instructions

  Strip 3 1/16 inches of the outer plastic sheath from one end of the coaxial cable, without cutting through the inner braided sheath. Pull the braided sheath back and down over the cable. The plastic insulation can remain on the inner copper wire.

  Stretch the braided sheath down over the cable 3 1/16 inches, and tape the braided sheath to the cable. The braided sheath and the inner copper wire should be the same length, extending in opposite directions.

  Crimp a connector to the opposite end of the cable appropriate for your radio receiver's external antenna jack. Plug the antenna into your receiver.
