Yaesu 897D Specs

The Yaesu FT-897D is an amateur radio transceiver that can operate on MF, HF, VHF, and UHF bands. It comes with its own battery supply that can output up to 20 watts, or you can use an external power supply for up to 100 watts. The FT-897D also features a built-in digital signal processor which can filter out weak signals on stations with a lot of traffic.
  1. Frequency Range

    • The FT-897D can receive the following ranges of frequencies: 0.1 to 56 MHz, 76 to 108 MHz, 118 to 164 MHz, and 420 to 470 MHz. It can transmit only on amateur radio frequencies which are the 160 to 6 m band, 2 m band, and 70 cm band. It can also transmit on the Alaska emergency frequency, which is 5.1675 MHz. The synthesizer steps 10 Hz at a time when operating in CW or SSB mode, and 100 Hz at a time when operating in AM, FM, or WFM mode.

    Power

    • The normal power supplied to the FT-897D is 13.8 V DC with a negative ground. You can use an optional Ni-MH battery pack that will supply 13.2 V. While the radio is squelched it consumes approximately 600 mA. While it's actively receiving signals it consumes 1 amp, and while actively transmitting it consumes up to 22 amps. The antenna supplies an impedance of 50 Ohms, unbalanced.

    Transmitting and Receiving

    • The FT-897D can transmit using up to 100 W on the 160-6 meter band, 50 W on the 2 m band, and 20 W on the 70 cm band using SSB, CW, or FM mode. The maximum deviation for the FM bands is plus or minus 5 kHz. The microphone creates an impedance of about 200 to 10,000 Ohms. Normal impedance is around 600 Ohms. The receiver for the FT-897D uses intermediate frequencies which help to tune in stations by changing the frequency for more amplification. The receiver changes the intermediate frequency first by 68.33 MHz, then by 455 kHz.

    Dimensions

    • The case of the FT-897D is approximately 7.9 inches wide and 10.2 inches long. It stands 3.2 inches high. Without the battery installed and the microphone and antenna attached, it weighs 8.6 lbs.
