Amperex 6079 Vacuum Tube Specifications

Unlike the majority of tubes that ended up in home radio and television sets, the Amperex 6079 was a high-power device used for transmitting radio and television signals. You can still find the 6079 tube at specialty electronics dealers.
  1. Configuration

    • The 6079 has a glass outer envelope, a five-pin base and an anode pin at the top of the tube. The tube is 176mm high, with 27mm pins and a diameter of 118mm. It is meant to be air-cooled by simple convection or a low-speed fan.

The tube is a tetrode, meaning it is a four-element power amplifier having a filament, anode, grid and screen.

    Voltage and Current

    • The 6079's filament uses 10 volts at 9.9 amps. Typical plate voltage is 5,000 volts with a current of .452 amps. The grid operates at --200 volts, and the screen runs on +700 volts.

    Power and Frequency

    • The plate is rated for a maximum of 1,760 watts of power. The tube operates at a maximum recommended frequency of 60 megahertz.

    Equivalent Numbers

    • The 6079 also goes by the QB5 and 1750 designations. These three numbers all refer to the same tube.
