How to Install Compression Type BNC Connectors

Coaxial cables carry electronic signals at frequencies up to 11 GHz over a single conductor surrounded by an insulating material, a foil or braided shield and an outer protective covering. Cables terminated with BNC connectors attach to equipment input and output jacks with a quarter turn twist of the outer collar. You can install BNC connectors to cable using several methods, but the compression connection provides the simplest solution, as it only has one part: the connector itself.

Things You'll Need

  • BNC compression connector
  • Ruler
  • Cable stripper or scissors
  • BNC compression tool

Instructions

    • 1
A cable terminated with BNC makes the connection with a 1/4 turn.

Use the cable stripper or scissors to strip the outer conductor 1/2 inch back. This dimension may vary slightly with different connectors and my be shown in the metric system. Consult the instructions that come with your connector for exact dimensions.

    • 2

Strip the outer shield and the inner insulator back 1/4 inch from the end of the cable. Fold the shield back over the outer connector.

    • 3

Ensure that the center conductor points straight out and push the cable into the body of the connector firmly until it seats. Be sure the center conductor goes into the center pin socket.

    • 4

Open the lever on the compression tool and place the connector into the compression section, with the cable coming out the space provided. Close the lever firmly until it stops. Open the lever and remove the completed connections.
