Channels
The Bearcat 175XL can hold 16 different channels, each of which can hold a specific frequency. For example, you can program Channel 2 to 162.550 megahertz (MHz) and easily access it by pressing the "2" button. This feature allows you to save favorite frequencies and eliminates the need to enter each frequency code manually.
Bands
The 175XL can receive radio transmissions on three different sections, or "bands," of frequencies: 66 through 88 MHz, 118 through 174 MHz, and 406 through 512 MHz. Each band can predominately serve a different purpose. The first band will receive the audio portion of television broadcasts; the second is for police, fire and amateur radio; and the highest band receives other handheld mobile radio broadcasts.
Weather
The Bearcat 175XL has a dedicated weather mode, which allows it to scan the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) frequencies with the touch of a button. These seven NOAA frequencies, located between 162.400 and 162.550 MHz, provide up-to-date forecast information and severe-weather reports.
Case
The 175XL sits inside a plastic case designed to sit on a desk or table. It measures 240 mm wide by 62 mm high and 180 mm deep. The case contains a built-in 120-volt alternating-current (AC) power transformer.
Antenna
The Bearcat 175XL comes with an attached telescoping antenna intended for indoor use. A port on the side of the unit allows you to connect it to a larger external antenna for better reception. Use it with an antenna with a resistance ranging between 50 and 70 ohms.
