History
While there is no specific individual or time frame associated with the invention of amateur radio, it is believed to have begun in the late 1800s or early 1900s. During World War I in 1917, the United States put a ban on all amateur radio service. The ban was lifted two years later when the war ended.
Significance
VHF amateur radio operators work on their own, outside of a commercial property, meaning their airwaves rarely feature any sort of advertising. So many are able to exchange ideas and report without restrictions imposed on "paid" broadcasters. That said, amateur radio operators still must adhere to guidelines set forth by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Involvement
Many VHF amateur radio broadcasters become involved by joining a club that offers information on licensing and operations. Amateur radio operators also must become licensed (through an exam), after which they will be issued a call sign via the government.
