How Do I Renew My Ham Radio Operator's License on the Computer?

There are more than 600,000 ham radio operators in the United States. These amateur radio operators are tested and licensed by the Federal Communication Commission to communicate on 17 dedicated frequency bands. Renewing your ham radio license can be done in just a few minutes on any computer. In most cases, the renewal is free and can be done 90 days before your license expires.
  1. FCC Registration

    • Amateur radio operator licenses can be renewed through the Federal Communication Commission̵7;s (FCC) webpage. In order to conduct business with the FCC electronically, you first need to register in the organization̵7;s Commission Registration System, known as CORES. Registration is a simple process, requiring only current contact information and your Social Security Number if you register as a private citizen or Employer Identification Number if you register as a business.

You̵7;ll also be asked to select a password to protect your application and licensing information. Upon registration, you̵7;ll be assigned an FCC Registration Number (FRN) and you can then link your existing call signs or antenna registrations with your new FRN.

    Submitting Your Application

    • With an FRN and password, log into the FCC̵7;s Universal Licensing System webpage to renew your license. You̵7;ll also need your radio service code and call sign or serial number. Select the license you wish to renew, and review the Licensee Information to ensure that your information is current and correct.

After answering some basic questions regarding your type of license and application purpose, there will be a final chance to review your contact and license information. Verify this information and electronically sign your application by typing your first and last name in the indicated boxes.

As of 2010, there is no fee for renewing your ham radio license unless you have been issued a Vanity call sign, in which case there is a small renewal fee per call sign.

    When to Renew

    • You may submit your renewal application no sooner than 90 days before the expiration of your current license. The FCC suggests you file at least 30 days before your license expires to allow time for your application to be processed.

If you allow your license to expire, the FCC permits a two-year grace period to file a renewal application, though you won̵7;t be permitted to operate radio equipment until the renewal is processed. After this grace period, you̵7;ll have to reapply and retake the licensing tests to be able to broadcast.
