Potentiometer
Potentiometers change the voltage applied to an electronic circuit to provide a control. When you turn up the volume of your radio with a knob, you adjust a potentiometer.
Construction
A potentiometer has three connections. Two leads connect a circular resistor across a voltage source. The wiper slides along the resistor picking off a specific voltage, depending on its position.
Precision Wire Wound
Varnished wire wrapped around a core provides a precision resistance. The varnish is removed along one side of the donut for the wiper to slide across, picking off its selected voltage.
High Quality Characteristics
Precision potentiometers proved a more linear and stable adjustment. They operate quietly and have a smooth feel.
Other Applications
Precision potentiometers connected to something that moves, varying a signal for monitoring. A potentiometer attached to a float can control a fuel gauge, or to an aircraft rudder to control a position indicator.
