Cobra 2000 Gtl History

The Cobra 2000 GTL CB Radio was the company's Cobra's flagship radio model for many years. Advanced for its day, the 2000 remains a great yard-sale find and a favorite of classic CB collectors worldwide.
  1. Origin

    • Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Uniden made the first 2000 GTL for Cobra in 1978.

    Philippine Years

    • When Uniden canceled its contract with Cobra in the mid-1980s, a company in the Philippines picked up the contract. This shift was a boon to CB enthusiasts because the quality of the radios improved.

    Malaysian Production

    • The contract for 2000 GTL production went to Ranger Communications in Malaysia for the unit's final production run.

    Quality Issues

    • The 2000 GTL went out with a whimper, as these Malaysian units are generally regarded as inferior clones of the original Uniden units, lacking even the enhancements of the previous generation.

    Replacement

    • The 2000 GTL was gradually phased out in the early 1990s, replaced by the model 2010, which had several refinements. These included a power desk mic, a vertical front panel and weather and alert channels.
