Instructions for a Marx 50350 Big Rail

The Marx 50350 Big Rail set includes a complete plastic O-gauge model train, plus tracks, scenery and accessories. Made in the 1960s and 1970s by Louis Marx & Co., the set was known for its good price point, and included a steam locomotive, coal tender, box car, log car and caboose on a 1/64 scale for use on the popular O track size. Although Marx has been out of business for years, sets can still be acquired. To get the train working, along with its enjoyable features like the locomotive smokestack, you will need to follow instructions both basic to all model railroads, and specific to the Big Rail.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble the track into your chosen layout, such as a standard oval or figure 8. Marx tracks use a pin system of connectors, meaning you should carefully insert the pins at one end of each track piece into the rails of the next piece to join them together. Ensure that all pieces are attached tightly so the electrical connection is made.

    • 2

Connect the transformer to the track by attaching the wires from the track connection terminal to the transformer, then attaching the terminal to the underside of the track. Plug in the transformer, leaving the power switch in the "off" position.

    • 3

Place the train cars onto the track, starting with the locomotive and ending with the caboose. Connect the cars using the distinctive Marx couplers, which are not compatible with most other brands' couplers. Make sure all cars are secure on the rails before running the train.

    • 4

Run the train, by turning the power switch to "on" and using the controls attached to the transformer.

    • 5

Place any interactive accessories, such as a crossing gate, in the proper position under the track so the trigger is tripped by the passing train.
