DIY Model Railroad Water

Model railroaders often seek realism when building their layouts. They seek to create scenes that attract their friends and family members who don't share the same interest in model trains. One such scenery feature holding such potential is water. Whether a lake or stream, a water-based scene adds an element to the layout that complements other features or offers a contrast from the rest of the scenery. Many hobby shops realize the need for water scenes and stock these supplies.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the bed of the water scene. Using acrylic paint and brushes, paint the bed of the river, stream, lake, harbor, or ocean with colors that give the perception of depth. A sandy color is best for shallow areas, such as shorelines and sandbars. Blend in darker colors to create the illusion of greater depths.

    • 2

Add submerged features to the bed of the water scene. If you have rocks, tires, or other items to place below the water surface, add them before adding water.

    • 3

Add the water. There are different materials used for water. The most common are plastic pellets to melt in place, two part resins and acrylic liquids that dry clear and glassy. Some materials can be spread around with a paint brush; other materials shouldn't be. It depends on the directions supplied. Review the directions for how to add your specific water modeling material. If you have ships or boats to add, do so before the water solidifies.
