How to Install Lighting for a Model Railroad

Model railroad lighting comes in two basic forms -- light-up structures and street lights. Model homes and other structures have a port on the bottom that enables you to switch out the lightbulb, whereas the street light globe typically unscrews, enabling you to switch out the light. White lights are suitable for street lights, but opt for amber or yellow lights in homes and structures because they effectively replicate incandescent lights. Drill holes through the plywood train town base to accommodate the power cords, which will be inserted into a power strip or a lighting control panel unit.

Things You'll Need

  • Razor knife
  • Drill
  • 1/3-inch-wide drill bit or small hole saw drill attachment
  • Vacuum with hose attachment
  • Silicone glue
  • Small paintbrush
  • Power strip or control panel

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a hole in the grass mat to accommodate the footprint of the light post or structure. Use a razor knife to cut an "X," then place the item on the underlying plywood and trim the grass mat so it fits precisely around the base.

    • 2

Remove the structure or lamp post from the train town and drill a hole through the plywood board that serves as the base for the train town. The hole must be large enough to accommodate the cord and the small plug that connects the structure or lamp post to the power cord. Opt for a large drill bit or a small hole saw drill attachment. A hole saw drill attachment is a circular drill bit that looks something like a bottlecap. It's used to drill a circular hole through wood.

    • 3

Turn on the vacuum and use the hose attachment to suck up the saw dust that was created by the drilling process. Hold the vacuum hose at least 1/2 inch away from the surface of the grass mat to avoid damaging it.

    • 4

Run the power cord under the plywood board that's supporting the train town and pass the pin plug end of the power cord up through the hole and plug it into the bottom of the structure or lamp post.

    • 5

Apply a small amount of silicone glue to the perimeter of the underside of the lamp post base using a small paintbrush. This will hold it in place and it will prevent top-heavy lights from tipping.

    • 6

Position the structure or lamp post in its final position in the train town. The structure or lamp post must be positioned above its hole.

    • 7

Plug the power cord into a power strip located beneath the train town, or plug it into a controller panel that enables you to operate the power supply to various components of the train town.
