How to Maintain a Model Train Engine

Taking care of your model trains ensures that they will run properly and last a long time. While the maintenance is not as difficult as maintaining a real train engine, it is just as important. If you don't maintain a model train engine, the engine will not run efficiently and may eventually stop running at all. You should complete maintenance on your model train once a month if you are operating it; if you are storing the engine, complete the tasks when you pack the train away.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the shell from the model train engine. Some train shells are held on with a small screw at the back of the engine, while others are held in place with small plastic tabs.

    • 2

Apply a drop or two of model train lubricating oil onto each of the gears located inside the train shell. The gears are typically located just above the wheel assemblies. Clean off any excess oil with a soft cloth.

    • 3

Inspect the gears for missing teeth. If a gear is missing any teeth, it must be replaced for proper operation.

    • 4

Dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and clean off any residue on the interior components of the train engine. Clean the train wheels with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to remove any dirt or residue.

    • 5

Replace the train shell after the interior is cleaned and oiled.
