How to Build an N-Scale Railroad

An N-scale railway is a specific size of hobby train track that is one of the smallest forms of train tracks available. This form of track runs on analog or DCC power and uses a complicated system of wires and electric switchboards to control the movement of the train, similar to that of a real electric train system. For the beginner, it is not necessary to create a large variety in train patterns. A simple layout is the best way to start to avoid complicated problems when learning about the wiring and switches required to operate the N-scale train system.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a layout for the train from the track pieces. You can make the layout as complicated or as simple as you want. For beginners, however, it is best to have a simple layout, such as an oval or figure eight-shaped layout. Place the track onto the table.

    • 2

Connect the wires from the train track to the switchboard using pliers. Place the train onto the track and start the switchboard to determine if the wires are joined correctly. If the train runs smoothly on the track, mark the placement of each wire on the top of the table. If it does not run correctly, then make any necessary connection adjustments.

    • 3

Drill a small ½-inch hole along each marked area for the train wires to fit under the table. Fit the wires through the holes and connect them to the switchboard under the table. Connect the switchboard to an electrical outlet to power the train.

    • 4

Place the train on the track and run it to test the track once more. Make any necessary wiring changes or track adjustments.

    • 5

Fill in the train table with scenery, buildings and other decorations to give the train track a finished look. You can add a few scenery pieces at a time, or fill the entire table at once. Many people spend years completing an N scale train setup, adding additional track, cars and scenery as they have time and money.
