How to Replace the Power Cord on a Lionel Transformer

Lionel is one of the leading producers of model toy train systems. Lionel transformers are the power source for supplying power to Lionel toy trains. These units are powered by 120 alternating current (AC) from an electrical outlet. Usually these units operate with no problems. However, proper storage can determine the life of the unit's power cord. Household pests and human error can damage the power cord and warrant its replacement.

Things You'll Need

  • New power cord
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire strippers
  • Screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Lionel transformer and turn it upside-down. Use the screwdriver to remove the screw holding the bottom cover in place. Lift the cover off the Lionel transformer.

    • 2

Disconnect the two wires of the existing power cord from the transformer. Some units use screw terminal connections and others may use plastic twist caps for splicing. Pull the old cord through the rubber grommet at the back of the transformer casing and throw it away.

    • 3

Push the end of the new cord through the rubber grommet. Strip 1/2-inch of insulation off the ends of these two wires. Reconnect these to wires to the two existing wire connects at the transformer. When this is complete, the wire connections should be the same as the original cord.

    • 4

Place the cover back on the bottom of the Lionel transformer. Reinstall the screws and tighten them using the screwdriver.
